A club in Merseyside, North West England, has started an evening boxing club exclusively for women and it’s proven to be a huge success says the BBC.

Many of the girls say it’s a nice change not to have boys around for various reasons. One girl says that boys are stronger, so it’s easier to go against another girl with the same strength. Another says that boys think “they rule when they don’t”, while a third says it’s just nice not to have sweaty boys around.

It’s all about encouraging these girls to take up sport while they feel safe and accepted in the space and not like they’re being looked at by boys as boxing coach Emma Goulding says in the video.

Professional boxer Natasha Jonas says there haven’t always been a lot of women involved in the sport. She says she often had to box the same person three or four times since there was only one category for women in earlier years.

The best thing about making place for this girls to do a sport like boxing without having to face gender discrimination or having to compete with men is that these girls now have a place to learn what could become a valuable skill or career and nurture that.

Women have been present in the sport of boxing since it’s very early beginnings, and the first recorded match between two women took place in 1722 according to Bloody Elbow. But even though women have long been involved, they were also stopped from competing as many athletic commissioners refused to sanction the fights or issue licences to women boxers.

Women’s boxing only made it’s debut at the Olympics in 2012.

But now with gyms offering classes like this to young women and teaching them that gym is fun, girls like these now have the opportunity to go on to doing great things in the sport and making a space for themselves in the world of boxing and hopefully many other sports.
