5 Ways to lower your cholesterol

accreditation
Before you start devouring your fifth take-away meal this week, think of the possible damage you’re doing to your health.

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver and found in an assortment of foods, is both good and bad.

On the one hand, it’s needed to produce Vitamin D, various hormones and to aid the digestion of fats, while on the other it wreaks havoc in our bloodstream, elevating our risk of heart failure and stroke.

There are many other factors too such as age and genetic makeup that affect the body’s natural cholesterol balance, but exercise and eating sensibly remain within our reach.

Here are 5 foods – and some recipes – that help lower your cholesterol:

Eat a fibre loaded breakfast such as oats, wheat biscuits, wholegrain bread and muffins or fruit. Not only will the high-fibre quotient fill you up and make you regular, but the soluble fibre found in most morning feasts also reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), "bad" cholesterol.

Make legumes a part of your diet at least three times a week. They are healthy, filling and the wide variety of dishes that can be whipped up from just one can of beans is endless.

Eat more fish and avocado pear because it’s tasty and packed with omega-3 fatty acids which lower cholesterol, reduces blood pressure and alleviates the risk of developing blood clots.

Switch to olive oil instead of regular sunflower oil. The potent mix of antioxidants lowers your levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol while keeping your levels of good (HDL) cholesterol safe and sound.

Want to go the extra mile? Try extra virgin olive oil as it is less processed and contains more of the healthy antioxidants your body requires.

Add garlic to your meals. This powerful and highly versatile vegetable helps lower cholesterol, reduces the risk of heart disease, fights infection and boosts your immunity.
