Why I support the new Liquor Act

In the light of the new Western Cape liquor laws, many, like Lili Radloff are opposed to its restricting elements.

But, then there are some who welcome the change, like our reader who believes that these laws can help stop woman abuse and become a tool for social change.

Actually - the World Health Organisation has urged governments to reduce the hours and days of sale of alcohol. It has been proven to reduce Violence against women, other forms of violence as well as road accidents.

My PA used to be an alcoholic, and the longer he was out for, the more we knew things were going to be tough when he got home.

Yes it is inconvenient for those of us who forget to buy wine/beer for a braai, but for those children who are being abused on a daily basis, perhaps one day of respite is the least we could do.

Violent alcoholics and abusers generally don't plan ahead, for anything. Surely we can have the inconvenience of no wine on a Sunday because we forgot to buy, when we realise what it costs some women and children?

Having a porn channel

Having witnessed firsthand the damage that porn does, especially to children, I am never in favour of more of it being available.

You see, I am a 2 x victim of some young guys who got addicted to porn and acted out their fantasies.

One of them confronted me years later and apologised for his actions, and has since gotten counselling and dealt with his porn addiction and the behaviours it brought out.

I am a girl who got dressed in a cupboard for years, and whose first sexual experiences were not exactly consensual at the age of 7, by other boys who wanted to act out what they had seen.

Personally I would prefer govt do something about porn available and rampantly marketed on cellphones, with uncurbed access by children.

When young boys watch porn, it changes the way they view sex etc, and it is no wonder we have increasing cases of young girls being drugged and raped and then recorded on cellphones and sent around.

Not every person who watches porn/drinks alcohol is going to turn out to be a rapist/abuser, but if we can limit access, perhaps we can all enjoy a little more freedom.

To you, it is a case of your freedom, to me it is a case of mine. We are on opposite sides of a coin.
