The perfect gift?

Wouldn’t it be amazing to find a really valuable gift in among the socks, novelty ties and gift vouchers under the Christmas tree? Here are four things to think about.

1. Who needs more stuff?
Does anybody you know really need more shirts, bath salts or kitchen appliances? What about novelty knick-knacks that will gather dust at the back of the cupboard? Most of our homes are already filled with unused items. Instead of giving a physical gift, consider giving a lasting, valuable experience.

2. The gift that keeps on giving
If you’ve heard the cliché of the “gift that keeps on giving”, you may not consider the true meaning behind it. Some gifts are funny, once-off or forgettable. Other gifts create real worth in someone’s life. A truly meaningful gift is one whose benefits last for a long time, enriching a life. The best gift can unlock creativity, help start a business, improve quality of life, or even just stimulate a curious mind.

3. Unique and useful
Many people struggle to find a gift that is both unique and imaginative, on the one hand, but also practical and useful, on the other. A great gift encompasses both of these factors – it’s a creative idea, you can tailor it exactly to the recipient’s personality, and it isn’t a silly gimmick but a useful, usable present.

4. It shows you care
Nothing shows that you care about someone more than a gesture that emphasises their personal goals and aspirations. Giving a meaningful gift is a heartfelt sign that shows your desire to improve somebody’s life in a real way – and not with socks or perfumes.

This year, GetSmarter is making it easy for you to give the most amazing gift of all to a loved one – education. The GetSmarter Give the Gift of Education competition allows you to nominate a person of your choice by motivating why they deserve to get a free place on one of GetSmarter’s part-time, online courses. If the story gets enough votes from the community, your nominee will stand in line to win the prize.

The competition closes on 3 December 2010 and the three winning nominees will get a free place on the course chosen for them, to the value of R8,000 each.
