Woman of the Week: Christine Buthelezi

She not runs the show at Mangwanani Spa Zevenwacht, but has also been a key player in the success of the Magwanani brand.

As general manager, with no formal beauty or business education, Christine has managed to keep her spa's flame blazing wildly as one of South Africa's most recognised and loved beauty health resorts.

"I started at the bottom and managed to work myself up. It doesn't end here though, as I plan to become a force to be reckoned with both in the beauty and business arenas," she continues.

"Pushing myself to the limit has become my number one motivator and that's how I landed the position of general manager at Mangwanani Zevenwacht. I wasn't afraid to try out something new and to unleash my full potential – which I've done."

Christine, who swapped feeding chickens for a more attractive career at a massage studio three years ago, says that life is indeed what you make of it.

"I was given an opportunity to change my life and explore a career that I had never known before. The beauty world was a foreign one to me and I could very easily have ignored this opportunity and continued my life as a babysitter and chicken farm worker.

"But I've always known that I was destined for greater things and today I am in a management position and slowly establishing myself as yet another SA success story."

With only seven months in the driving seat as general manager, Christine explains that it hasn't been easy to find her feet.

"I started at Mangwanani as a masseuse, then slowly worked myself up to become one of the duty managers at the spa. However, at no point was I expected to make decisions and run the spa on my own," she continues.

"Things have changed since then; I'm now part of a multi-award winning, African day spa management team. I have been given the opportunity to make huge decisions regarding finances, client service and strategy; areas I never thought that I could contribute to. It is still a bit daunting, but I've been able to voice my ideas."

The single mother of a seven-year-old says that with the knowledge acquired at Mangwanani, she is well on her way to the top of the business world.

"I've been given a platform to transform and launch myself into one of SA's fastest growing industries. I'm not only the general manager but also a shareholder, and I have set my eyes on bigger and more exciting business ventures."

"Although at the moment, my baby is Mangwanani Zevenwacht, and that's where my full focus will be. I've got big plans up my sleeve – I want my spa to be recognised for its uniqueness, warmth and excellent service," she adds.

"I've made it this far in only three years – the future can only have greater opportunities in store for me."
