How did Organic Touch by Miss Gates evolve into a viable business?

It all started in September 2016. In my spare time I’d make my own facial scrub and body butter to keep my skin moisturised. When two of my friends suggested that I consider turning this into a viable business, I started giving samples to a few people, whose feedback was positive.

With just R1 000, I bought containers and ingredients and starting selling. A month later, I had made a profit and client feedback was positive. That’s when I started expanding the product range.

The Name Organic Touch By Miss Gates came from my nick name which I got in high school, “missgates”, which means Miss Masango.

How do you make your products?

I make the products myself in my mother’s kitchen. I use her fridge and stove because some products need to be heated, while we’re mixing them, as we want the oils to blend with the base to be more effective on the skin.

What does the range include and what is the price point?

We have three different scrubs, namely Coffee, Rooibos and Lemon and Cinnamon. There are also a body butter, facial night cream, black soap paste, facial wash/toner and a face butter.

Prices range from R120 - R250.

How difficult was it to leave your 9-5 job to focus on your business?

I left my job as an HR officer in December 2016 and at that time I was seven months pregnant. My job was very demanding, which played a part in my decision to leave. I I decided that 2017 was going to  be the year I focused on my baby and business. It was not easy, but I managed. I remember on the day I was due to deliver, I had to ship orders for clients and dealt with clients while in hospital. The journey has had its ups and downs, but it’s been worth it.

What makes Organic Touch by Miss Gates unique?

The range is different because it has a touch of special ingredients, we source our oils from different parts of the world to ensure they’re of top quality. And they do of course have a touch of Miss Gates hands.

What have been the challenges in running your own business?

Dealing with clients isn’t easy; you constantly have to be present and active in ensuring you offer them the best service. Being an entrepreneur also poses financial challenges, especially for someone who’s had the security of a salary. Now, I have to manage my finances better and always ensure that my bills are paid. This journey has taught me a lot and I continue learning every day.
