1. No career goals or vision

Setting career goals and a vision is very important, as it helps streamline your steps towards your ultimate career goal. You also get to see what you are short of to reach this goal, whether it’s going back to school for more qualifications, or being on the lookout for the relevant training at your current job.

2. Not evolving with the changing job market

The world is forever changing, so are the requirements for your job. So it is very important to attend all the conferences you can find, and join all the professional organisations in line with your career goals. This lets prospective employers know you are eager to learn and shows them how serious you are about your career growth.

3. Overstaying at entry level jobs

We don’t all get our dream jobs straight out of university, so it’s okay if you take a job that doesn’t pay that well, to get your foot into the door, and  for experience, especially at a company with a great reputation. However, you shouldn’t feel comfortable in that position. After some time, you should be looking for jobs in line with your future career goals.

4. Settling for a job with no future prospects

Some are fortunate to get a first job that not only pays well but has decent benefits. However, if it doesn’t offer you the chance to progress, than that just means you’re no closer to your career goals than you were before. It’s very important that you does not feel stagnant in your job, there must be room to propel to your career goals.

5. Not compiling a career identity

You must always have something to show from your previous jobs. This is a list of skills you will keep updated, with every successful venture you were a part of, and any additional professional training you attended. This must be easily available and visible on your resume or personal website.
