Virgin Money Spot

Free at Apple Store and Google Play

Do you hate the thought of logging on to internet banking to make a one-off payment, or the process involved in adding a new recipient to make an EFT payment on your banking app? Let’s be honest, sometimes we receive the wrong branch code or sometimes there are difficulties just passing this first step.

The good news for anyone with a smartphone is that you can now make payments simply by sending the equivalent of a WhatsApp message. The catch? Well, you have to download the free Virgin Money Spot app from either the Google Play Store, or the Apple App Store.

With Virgin Money Spot, EFTs are a thing of the past – and it’s completely free to use. This means there are no banking fees; no transactions fees on debit, credit or cheque cards; or costs to receive money. Spot works with any South African bank account and in order to send or receive money, you will have to add your bank details.

To get started, simply download the app, add your banking information and create a secure PIN. To make payment, just send a message and amount to an individual by allowing the app access to your contacts. They will receive a text message with the amount and a link to download the app. Recipients have seven days to claim their money.

For your peace of mind, the app offers 3-D Secure payments, plus your data is encrypted and protected by a PIN code. You will receive notifications on the app for each transaction.

If you want to earn a little something extra, the app has a points-based rewards programme for transacting, or by sharing your unique referral code so both you and your friends earn R20 each per referral for new users.
