There are thousands of schools across the country, especially in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and North West, that have been positively identified as containing asbestos, placing thousands of schoolchildren at risk of developing respiratory problems and even cancer.

The cost of removing this dangerous material has been estimated in the billions, but health experts and advocacy groups believe the cost of doing nothing in terms of an unfolding health crisis is immeasurable.
