On 7 November 2022, City Press published an article titled “Makaziwe is the owner of Nelson Mandela’s treasures: Court finds”. The article related to pending court proceedings between the SA Heritage Resources Agency (Sahra), the Robben Island Museum (RIM) and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), against Dr Makaziwe Mandela and others.

The article incorrectly stated that the Johannesburg High Court had found in favour of Dr Makaziwe Mandela and found her to be the owner of the listed items which previously belonged to former president Nelson Mandela. The article further incorrectly stated that Sahra and DSAC had argued for the removal of the items from private ownership for the purposes of historical preservation.

The matter, which is before the Pretoria High Court, concerns the preservation of items of historical significance and not, as suggested in our reportage, about the private ownership of the items and transfer thereof to the applicants.

The application was removed from the roll to allow Dr Mandela and the other respondents to file further court papers, and not as a finding for or against any party.

City Press regrets this misinterpretation of the proceedings and apologises for any incorrect understandings that may have resulted from this error. The article has been retracted.
