An autistic teenager has finally applied for an identity document after a Home Affairs branch in KwaZulu-Natal had previously refused to help him because he could not speak isiZulu.

Kagiso Gabaocoe and his mother, Nomfundo Gabaocoe (52), went to Home Affairs’ New Hanover branch on May 4 and were turned away when officials insisted on interrogating the matric pupil in isiZulu, despite his mother explaining that he could not speak the language because he attended English medium schools all his life due to these being the only schools that catered for autistic children.
