She is the first member of her family to go to university, but for an 18-year-old from the Eastern Cape, her arrival in Stellenbosch University two weeks ago was anything but a triumph.

She was under the impression that she would be provided with accommodation as she had obtained funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas). However, she and more than 100 other students were left despondent when they could not register and were also informed that there was no accommodation for them.
