DJ Maphorisa was all smiles when he left the Randburg Magistrates' Court on Friday morning after the assault charges against were finally withdrawn on his fourth court appearance. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said his representations sent to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) by his legal team were successful.

DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sekowe, was arrested in May this year after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend actress and DJ, Thuli Phongolo at her home in Sandton. He spent a day in the Randburg Police Station holding cells and made his first court appearance on May 8.

On Friday morning, the popular amapiano music producer, who wore all black, and his legal team beamed with excitement after their victory.

NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said they had accepted the representation by Sekowe and his legal team.

We can confirm that the case against DJ Maphorisa was withdrawn after he lodged representations with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions which were successful. He lodged representations, and upon studying them we then took a decision to withdraw [the charges].

She added:

Remember that the complainant in the matter filed a withdrawal statement. So that meant we had to look into any other areas that we had to prove our case. Upon such consideration, the office of the director of prosecutions took a decision to withdraw the case.

The case was initially withdrawn by Phongolo on the morning of Sekowe's first court appearance, but the NPA decided to carry on with it because it said it had enough evidence.

It was previously reported that he had turned down the NPA’s proposal to go for a diversion programme which included anger management. He said they could proceed with trial because he wanted to prove his innocence.
