Educational psychologist Donna Du Plooy says South African teenagers face a number of stressors that include but are not limited to exposure to violence – physical, emotional and sexual abuse, socioeconomic barriers and difficulties in accessing effective and affordable mental health care systems.

Poverty, educational difficulties and social difficulties, including bullying, cyber-bullying, the impact of social media are other challenges they face.
