South Africa made a grave error at the beginning of the local Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak. The messaging about consultations with doctors was wrong and could lead to loss of life.
Health specialist Professor Michael Herbst told City Press that as a consequence of ill-advised messaging around how people should access healthcare facilities as and when they needed to, a pervasive fear of doctors’ rooms and hospitals gripped many South Africans and led to a sharp decline in not only general practitioner consultations but also for screening, which is vital to the early detection of chronic illnesses and monitoring of cancer patients.
