ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has challenged anyone with evidence to support the claim that he was among senior ANC figures allegedly involved in soliciting a bribe from businessman Mthunzi Mdwaba in exchange for facilitating a R5 billion deal with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) to step forward and present their evidence.

On Thursday morning, Mbalula opened a crimen injuria and defeating-the-ends-of-justice case against Mdwaba, the former chair of Productivity SA and CEO of Thuja Capital, at Sandton Police Station.

This comes after Mdwaba recently accused Mbalula, Labour and Employment Minister Thulas Nxesi, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande of sending intermediaries to him to demand a bribe of R500 million from the proceeds of R5 billion that Thuja Capital would have received from the now-frozen UIF jobs scheme.

Many took to social media to criticise the party, with former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela expressing disappointment, saying the DA could have used other ways to send its message.
