The ANC’s uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) president, Kebby Maphatsoe says an audio recording circulating on social media in which he is heard telling members to “take up arms,” is not about defying President Cyril Ramaphosa but is drawing his attention to the plight of former liberation soldiers who feel neglected.
In the recording, Maphatsoe says that the military vets tried to engage with their own comrades in the leadership of the ANC but what they received was the opposite of what they fought for.
“We shall not submit. We will fight back with everything at our disposal in the defence of our people, our future and our freedom,” he said, adding that the veterans would be “the spear that will strike against the enemy in defence of our people”.
