Communities living in areas around abandoned mines believe government should legalise artisanal mining to enable them to take part in the mines’ rehabilitation and closure, according to a new report.
The research report, titled The Impact and Assessment of Improper Mining Closures in SA: Community Perspectives of Human Rights, was released by the Lawyers for Human Rights this month. It says mining companies left communities with polluted environments and economically stressed ghost towns that are saddled with social ills.
