Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced revised guidelines on Friday night, reducing the isolation period for people with mild Covid-19 symptoms and those who were asymptomatic from 14 days to 10 days.
“This recommendation is based on the evidence that most patients with a mild Covid-19 infection continue to shed the virus from their upper airways for seven to 12 days. The presence of detectable virus does not necessarily imply infectiousness. It has been proven that, in mild cases, virus cultures are only positive for eight to nine days after the symptoms’ onset,” the minister explained in a virtual briefing.
