A senior and widely respected detective from the Hawks, who specialised in investigating terrorism, Lieutenant-Colonel Frans Mathipa (53), warned his wife before he left last Sunday evening to lock the gates and doors of their home.

Mathipa told his wife before leaving: "These are dangerous people I’m dealing with."
