President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for Police Minister Bheki Cele to act on the gang rape of eight models, who were filming a music video in Krugersdorp on Friday morning, seems to yield positive results.

Ramaphosa instructed Cele during his opening address at the ANC national policy conference in Nasrec to ensure that the police find the suspects who committed the crime. He described the gang rape as vile.

Cele responded by instructing the police commissioner and the police top brass to leave no stone unturned in finding the suspects.

Barely 12 hours after the incident, police arrested three of the 20 suspects linked to the crime in one of the informal settlements in Krugersdorp.

He said a group of eight models went to Krugersdorp near an unused mine dump to shoot a music video when they were accosted by 10 armed men wearing blankets.

The group ordered the women to strip naked and lay down. Ten more armed men appeared and gang raped the women. The women are believed to be models from Soweto and Alexandra.

Cele said the three suspects arrested were foreign nationals.

“We are going all out in the area to find all the suspects. I have instructed the police to come back with them.”

The police minister also mentioned that one woman was repeatedly raped by 10 men. He condemned the act as barbaric.

“The coordinator of the music video is a former police officer who has worked in the police station in the area for a while and she ought to have known about the level of crime in those mining dumps. I am not trying to blame her, but she took the women there knowing that the area was not safe.”

Cele explained the least the coordinator should have done was to report to the nearest police station that they were going to film a music video there.

Police would have either provided safety, accompanied them or advised otherwise.

Meanwhile, Cele also commended the police in Limpopo for arresting three suspects accused of killing Collins Chabane Local Municipality mayor Moses Maluleke last week.

During a media briefing, Cele said one of the suspects was positively identified but did not elaborate on how the person was linked to the murder of the mayor.

He said the three suspects were part of a group of eight individuals who went to Maluleke’s house intending to rob him after witnessing him buying a lot of meat around the area. After gaining entry to Maluleke’s house, the group knocked at the door and when his son opened it, they allegedly shot and injured him before killing the mayor.

Maluleke, who was killed last Thursday, will be buried in Malamulele on Tuesday.
