Internationally acclaimed musician DJ Shimza is smiling all the way to the bank after controversial former artist manager Nhlamulo "Nota" Baloyi finally paid him for calling him a corrupt toy boy.
Last year, Baloyi was found guilty of defaming the globe-trotting DJ for claiming he was a corrupt toy boy and was ordered to pay him R200 000 in damages.
After initially putting up a fight, insisting he would not pay him a cent, Baloyi accepted defeat and promised to pay DJ Shimza, whose given name is Ashley Raphala.
City Press can reveal that the outspoken Baloyi paid the DJ in three instalments, with the balance due later this month.

Baloyi confirmed to City Press this week that he had paid Raphala R37 500 in two tranches and R50 000. He said he now only owed the muso R75 000, which he promised to pay by month end. But Baloyi, who managed various artists including Kwesta, said it was not yet over as he had instructed his lawyers to oppose Raphala's legal team's bill.
The bill includes a R528 charge to draw summons in June last year, R1 312 for an hour of consultation to prepare for trial last November, R2 071 for 19 calls made and received for the case, R19 000 for the perusal of trial bundle and DJ Shimza's Advocate EJJ Nel's legal bill of R252 540.
"Why would fees billed at R289 000 end up being taxed at R349 000, when it should only be R200 000 after deductions?"

In 2021, Raphala applied for a gag order against Baloyi after he claimed that he had made defamatory allegations against him on Twitter, accusing him of unduly benefiting from government tenders because of his romantic relationship with Athi Geleba, who works as head of digital communications in the presidency.
