Seven lives have been lost and over 50 injured in a horrific bus crash on the R37 between Lydenburg and Sabie in Mpumalanga, which has prompted an urgent call for heightened vigilance on the roads from Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga.

The incident on Friday afternoon saw a bus carrying passengers from Lydenburg to Sabie overturn after allegedly experiencing a tyre burst. The bus veered through a barrier, plunged down an embankment and landed on its side.

Chikunga conveyed her deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

She said:

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families during this difficult time of sorrow. Your pain is our pain, and your loss is our loss. We wish you all the strength you need as we come to terms with this tragic experience.

"We also wish a speedy return to good health to all the individuals who sustained injuries during the crash," she said.

With the festive season approaching and an anticipated increase in traffic volume, Chikunga urged all road users to exercise extreme caution and responsibility.

  • Refrain from using cellphones while driving.
  • Buckle up at all times.
  • Take regular breaks during long journeys.
  • Pedestrians must cross streets at marked intersections and wear bright clothing in low-visibility conditions.
