Two Mozambican nationals who attempted to steal an estimated R1.9 million worth of infrastructure lights belonging to the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality have been arrested and charged with the possession of stolen goods and damaging infrastructure.

The duo was arrested on Saturday by the Kosi Bay Border Management Authority (BMA). They were driving a grey Isuzu bakkie, in which 52 streetlights were found after it was searched at the port entry.

The BMA alerted the Hawks and Durban Metropolitan Police Service, which facilitated the seizure of the vehicle and handed the property over to the SA Police Service (SAPS) in Manguzi.

BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi confirmed that a case had been opened and handed over to the Hawks for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of the BMA, Michael Masiapato, commended the work of the border guards in preventing illegal activities and securing state assets.

Masiapato said:

The BMA border guards serve as the first line of defence, working around the clock to enforce immigration laws, thereby maintaining the integrity of our nation. Their vigilance and dedication in this incident contribute significantly to maintaining law and order. Their operation in intercepting municipal assets is truly commendable.
