A recent study has found that medical students at the University of Cape Town who come from rural areas around the country feel rejected by both their peers and their tutors, but have learnt resilience from their upbringing.

“Messing up wasn’t an option, because people counted on me,” said 30-year-old Nombuso Thetha*.
This kept her going despite several challenges back at home and alleged racism on the University of Cape Town (UCT) campus. She is currently a doctor in a public hospital in East London, Eastern Cape.
