#TrendingAwards2016: The tech trends of the year

accreditation

Technology from Africa developed exponentially this year, making a real difference in the lives of people from across the continent and the world.

Major successes such as non-governmental organisation Amandla.mobi connected people, keeping us up to date and giving us new perspectives with the year’s big events such as the #FeesMustFall movement.

It was also the year of the Election App, which News24 totally owned.

Video on Demand gained real traction, with Showmax making big gains, and Netflix becoming a household name in South Africa.

Virtual reality became more than sci-fi, with major cellphone networks and mainstream hardware stores offering the latest devices.

However, our innovation of the year has to be Cassper Nyovest’s AG#Hashtag cellphone – it was one of the most fun things we tried this year.

Cassper Nyovest

It wasn’t the best phone, or the cheapest, but to see a young, black entrepreneur making headway in the painfully white world of commercial technology is the sort of thing we need to see more of.
