Diversity training the way forward in transformation

August 30 looms as an important day for South African cricket. Having launched the Cricket for Social Justice and Nation Building initiative in response to the racism allegations that erupted after Proteas fast bowler Lungi Ngidi made some throwaway #BlackLivesMatter comments that sparked racial finger-pointing in the sport, Cricket SA (CSA) hopes to have a transformation ombud in place by then. Eugenia Kula-Ameyaw, the CSA board member and transformation committee head tasked with putting all of this together, explained how it will work.

How did last Sunday’s meeting with black players to kick off the programme go?

There was pain and hurt, and the opportunity to be listened to was appreciated, even though it may have come late or taken too long. The issue is, yes, things have happened, but there will be a due process for everything. The focus now is to make sure that this doesn’t happen to any other player in future.
