There was huge relief all round on Tuesday after the medical scans on South African star boxer Ludumo “9mm” Lamati was out of danger.

In a statement Boxing 5 Promotions said the scans had come back positive and the medical team would start "to bring him out of his induced state" on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old fighter collapsed in the ring on Saturday after the 12th round stoppage during his fight against British opponent, Nick Ball, for the WBC Silver featherweight title in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Lamati’s corner threw the towel in the final round, forcing the referee Kevin Parker to stop the fight. The boxer from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape was stretchered out of the ring while receiving oxygen and rushed to a hospital in Belfast.

On Monday, Boxing 5 Promotion issued this statement on his condition: "Ludumo is still being closely monitored and taken care of by the excellent doctors in Belfast. His vital signs are stable and we are hoping that they will slowly stop the sedation from tomorrow onwards. This is a process that takes time and healing. Please continue to send positive thought and prayers."

In its update on the wellbeing of Lamati, the company revealed that his condition was improving after they received the results of his medical scan.

The official statement on Tuesday read:

Updated scans from the medical staff in Ireland have been completed and the results, backed by the surgeons, have been positive. The team will now look to reduce Ludumo’s medication tomorrow [Wednesday]. This will start to bring him out of his induced state [coma] and give us the status of the injury with a more informed diagnosis of the recovery time needed. We thank all South Africans for the well wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Even Ball wished the South African well in his recovery.
