University of Johannesburg (UJ) are in the right path to capture their first Varsity football Cup as they are through to the semi-finals.

After beating their rivals Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) 1-0 in a nail-biting match at their Soweto campus, they have secured a spot in the last four. They now have collected 13 points, three ahead of second-placed Wits University and TUT who are third.

This was game number five since the competition started last month.

There are eight teams in the tournament and the best four will meet in the semi-finals. As it stands, after seven games, if UJ will still be leading they will play the team that will finish fourth with the second-placed team taking on number three.

UJ are the only unbeaten club so far but head coach Mandla Zwane said they still have a long way to go.

“It feels great to be through to the semi-finals but it’s not over yet. We all know that any team that has five or eight points still stands a chance to qualify,” the former Orlando Pirates and FC Porto player said after the game.

“Right now we are on top but it’s not over because we still have to play other teams.

“It’s obvious some have dropped points somewhere and they may come back and claim them. So it’s not safe as it looks at the moment.”

After beating the champions on Thursday, the Auckland Park side will be confident that this is their year to finally be champions.

They have previously missed out twice in the final, in 2014 and 2016.

With only two game remaining, the worst case scenario that can happen to them is to drop to fourth position.

They will play University of the Western Cape (UWC) next Thursday and North-West University (NWU) in their last group stage game.

UWC are currently on sixth position with four points while NWU are fourth with nine.
