A few weeks after the announcement of her perfume Pink Sapphire, Boity Thulo is adding another tier to her creativity.

This time she brings you a blush-coloured cider called BT Signature which has both an alcoholic and non-alcoholic variant and should be available at all liquor stores.

#Trending spoke with her about this latest pursual hot on the heels of a few other firsts for her – with the release of her EP 4436 and her popular reality TV show, Own Your Throne.

Wearing a maroon dress matching her hair she says: “I have been busier than most. I’ve got so many things going on but [they are] all things that I’m truly passionate about. I’m beyond excited, also honoured and grateful to be entering the food and beverage space.”

She follows in the footsteps of people such as Bonang Matheba, Khanyi Mbau, DJ Zinhle, Kelly Khumalo and Nomuzi “Moozlie” Mabena, who all either have their own drinks out or are the faces of a brand in what seems to be a fiscally viable move for local IT girls.

Letting us in on how this venture came about she explains: “Myself and Matthew Krone, my collaborator and partner, thought of some of the RTDs [ready to drinks] we enjoy and the ones we don’t. It [the drink] had to taste fantastic and had to be premium,” she says, suggesting that she took an active role in the process and direction of the beverage.

“What I present to my audience is of high quality, there’s elegance. So those are the elements in BT Signature. It tastes fantastic and I think people are really going to enjoy it.”

I know people will experience a premium quality fruit beverage. The process we used is kind of the same one used for wine-making. I think that’s a notch up from anything else I have tasted.

Her EP has been out for a while and given the Covid-19 pandemic, it wasn’t as easy to market with live performances as it would be usually. This Boity simply views as a silver lining.

“It has been difficult, but it also gave me an opportunity to place my attention on other things, things I could offer my audience outside my music. There is still time to go into studio, we’re creating more music videos,” she expounds in her husky tones.

At her EP launch, she stressed a “no substances” policy when it came to recording music. Her sessions are completely clean as she is usually on the microphone sound of mind and so too is everybody else in the studio with her.

We had to find out if she would allow a little leeway now that she has her own brand of alcohol?

She grins while firmly ensuring the rules remain the same. “No. That’s why I made the non-alcoholic version too. So, there is no excuse. We can all drink the non-alcoholic one.”

It tastes fantastic and I think people are really going to enjoy it.

Boity will insert the brand into the other spheres of her career – in music videos and the like. She says her drink fits in anywhere – whether you be at the beach or in a Lamborghini.

We don’t recommend you drink and then drive that Lambo as her cider is rather strong but still only has 4.5% alcohol.

A buzz is however easily established. As far as taste, the peach-flavoured fruit beverage isn’t wildly mind-blowing but enjoyable enough.

She has quite a large presence when you speak to her, a lot of energy surrounds her. The drink is however more toned down and subtle.

“I know people will experience a premium quality fruit beverage. The process we used is kind of the same one used for wine-making. I think that’s a notch up from anything else I have tasted. When you have it, I want you to feel like you’re in a celebratory mood. I want you to feel good and feel the burst of happiness that comes with it.”
