The Groote Schuur Minute was signed by Nelson Mandela, then president of the ANC, and then president FW de Klerk at Tuinhuis in Cape Town on May 4 1990. The document was a commitment by the two parties to resolve the existing climate of violence, as well as a commitment to stability and peaceful constitutional negotiations.
BOOK EXTRACT
Written by two ANC veterans, Mac Maharaj and Pallo Jordan, who were close to these events, Breakthrough sheds new light on the process that led to the formal negotiations to end apartheid. Focusing on the years before 1990, the book reveals the skirmishes that took place behind the scenes, as the principal adversaries engaged in a battle for positions that carved a pathway to the negotiating table.
