When Welcome Mandla Lishivha was 12 years old, he heard bangs from his mother’s room at the family home in Soshanguve, outside Pretoria. He thought it must be fireworks, but when he went to investigate, he found her dead against the wall, in a pool of blood. She had been shot by her boyfriend, Peter, who then turned the gun on himself.
A therapist advised that he write down what he missed about his mother; “the page” became “a way for me to cope with the loss”.
