An acclaimed Durban-based dance studio is celebrating a milestone.

Flatfoot Dance Company, one of the most acclaimed and awarded contemporary dance companies in eThekwini, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a spectacular new season of dance - “Things we hide from the light”.

The season will run from May 19 to 21 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre in Durban, where Flatfoot presented its first show in 2003.

“Things we hide from the light” is a stunning new work that showcases Flatfoot’s signature style of dance-making: serious, personal and politically engaged.

This style has earned Flatfoot international recognition, invitations, commissions and awards for its artistic excellence and vision.

Flatfoot is led by its founder and artistic director, Lliane Loots, who has been at the helm of the company for two decades.

Loots says,

It has been a journey of passion and perseverance, of grace and gratitude, of challenges and triumphs.

“We are proud of our legacy, our current direction and our future possibilities. We are also grateful for our dancers, past and present, who have trained, taught and performed with us in various spaces and contexts. And we are thankful for our audiences, who have supported us and embraced us as a family.”

“Things we hide from the light” is a reflection of Flatfoot’s history and identity as an African contemporary dance company based in Durban. It revisits some of the themes and moments that have shaped Flatfoot’s work over the years, while also exploring new ideas and expressions. It features three senior Flatfoot dancers: Sifiso Khumalo, Jabu Siphika and Zinhle Nzama.
