There might be an eerie coincidence in that Netflix announced the looming release of its Senzo Meyiwa documentary in the same week that Kelly Khumalo unveiled her upcoming gospel concert.
She will be taking to the stage at what could be considered her home of performance: Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre – on April 15.
Her publicists saw to it that any line of questioning about her views on the Netflix documentary were not mentioned. That, along with rumours of the crew of this documentary having signed non disclosure agreements, as well as not being available for interviews, swirl around this much-anticipated release.
Focusing rather on her concert Khumalo, the late Meyiwa’s former love interest and mother to his daughter, said:
She beamed as she explained how she felt when President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the latest round of amendments to the Covid-19 protocols, earlier this week.
“To my surprise, now that the gospel [concert] is up and running, the president has just allowed us to have more capacity. I feel like it’s God and God feels like it’s time – and I’m ready for it.”
The concert is to be all about the people who have complimented her spiritual journey, from her early days in church till now.
She said:
She said that would not be a train smash as she would also have pastor Bonsai Shongwe who discovered the vocal talents of Khumalo 18 years ago.
“He will be the motivator and the emcee for the night. So those are the people we have on the line-up. The Gospel Explosion is about Kelly Khumalo. All these other artists are the people who I would love to have around me as I embark on this beautiful journey.”
The show is not necessarily a mechanism for her to showcase her seventh studio album, which is yet to get a release date but is being fine-tuned in studio.
She explained:
What might you expect from the new album?
“I think even the title of it speaks for itself. It’s called From a God to a King. So, this is a person who was born a God but had to downgrade themselves to fit into the human society.”
She compared the project to being like a soundtrack that she said echoed the beauty of Africa “and the beauty how gifted we are as Africans”.
Fans of hers are also waiting for the next season of her reality TV show Life with Kelly Khumalo which the singer kept mum about for now. The second season was released in May last year.
She kept her cards close to the chest even more in terms of possible feature appearances on the album, but provided assurances that Mondli Ngcobo was still her main producer. “I have a couple of other surprises that we are still in studio with, just doing touch ups. I can’t give away too much.”
Fans will have to wait for the timing to be just right.
