Have you noticed the increased number of live gospel recordings and shows that take place towards the end of the year?
While it is obvious that the holy season is the best time for gospel artists to showcase their work and inspire their fans, it turns out that releasing new gospel music during the festive season is not only about the bonus sales, but also to invest in music works that last long into the following year.
Marketing and events manager Matthew Nkabinde said the increased number of gospel concerts could be because artists are trying to catch up and to stay relevant since Covid-19 negatively affected most of them during the lockdowns.
Nkabinde said:
He added that most of the music that was recorded during this time of the year was in preparation for next year's Easter programme.
“Whatever you’re recording now, you ideally want to release it in Easter, which is the time for gospel people. You want to give your editor enough time to work on the content, and release your first song around the first week of March.”
The events manager said it was crucial that they host gospel events before festivities begin, because even though Christmas was about the birth of Jesus Christ, when people get paid in December, they want to be with their families and spend money on them and on holiday activitie.

Gospel singer Mmatema Gavu, who doubles up as an MC, said a friend asked her a similar question recently, but she did not have an answer:
The musician said that the concerts were more work for her where she gets to be the MC. She added that she also made sure to use the festive season to regroup and be with her family:
Gavu is set to release an inspirational pop single titled My Time Is Now this week.
