Johannesburg-based Rasty Knayles is also quite elusive when it comes to the media, he’s one of those whose work speaks for itself. Whether it be a mural on a wall or skin art at his 1932 Tattoo parlour, his realism is revered.
He is looking to relaunch his popular Grayscale Store as an art gallery space for artists that have been putting in consistent work and deserve a platform to be showcased. Seated in the newly revamped space on Braamfontein’s De Korte Street where this project will take place, Knayles takes a sip out a black plastic cup, his dreads tied up. The adjoining 1932 tattoo shop hums with a few people.
