South African girls have it tough, especially those living in underserved and violent communities. The key to uplifting them is education, but more than 40% of girls drop out of school by Grade 8.

Brave, previously called Rock Girl, is a charitable organisation that supports girls so they can complete matric and become equipped with the skills and confidence to help themselves and other girls.

Says the organisation: “We use art, photography and film, radio, writing and travel to train girls to speak out and ultimately have a positive effect on the challenges they face.”

For the past year, high school girls have been trained as journalists and photographers and sent on a series of epic road trips around the country. They travelled more than 2 000km to document the stories of girls and women in radio and film, and to explore their own country, returning home with a new perspective on life.

On July 30, the fruits of their labour will be on display in a special exhibition, and guests will be treated to a seated dinner prepared by The Kitchen’s Karen Dudley, an awards show and a thrilling auction to raise funds for the next adventurous road trip.

This is a great opportunity to support an important charity. Remember to dress elegantly.
