When Kanye West first fell off the wagon, many of us excused his behaviour as the consequence of being a musical genius. With every tantrum, aimless ramble and bizarre Twitter post, he became more comical as we just watched from the outside.

However, when he first announced the beginning of his famed Sunday Service, it seemed like he might have been finding the light and coming back to us.

Now, we might see the strange Sunday Service become another hopeless situation as the practice slips further into what seems like a cult.

In a series of viral photos released by American publication Daily Loud, we see West and his devout followers consuming salmon and steak with their hands off what has been described as an "autopsy-style table". The Sunday Service attendees are also seen in white robes with hoodies that mimic the hit TV series The Handmaid's Tale.

If you’ve ever watched The Handmaid's Tale, then you’ll understand how deranged the comparison really is. The show is a dystopian story that depicts a totalitarian society, in which a fundamentalist regime takes control of what used to be the US. The leaders of the state treat women as property and fertile women are forced to bear children for the leaders of the regime.

While some are excusing it as another one of West’s antics, many social media users are showing real concern for the musician and even more concern for the members of his Sunday Service.

One Twitter user compared the musician's service to occultist leader and mass murderer Jim Jones, while another user wrote:

Kanye has had a long and illustrious career and earned the respect of his peers, who seem to be happy to play along with him as he parades around as a devout Christian, while forcing his churchgoers to perform strange rituals, with some cool songs added to the mix.

West was recently videoed at his 46th birthday party partaking in the Japanese practice Nyotaimori of earlier this month. The practice involves serving and eating sashimi or sushi off the naked body of a woman.

Ironically, during his marriage to mega influencer Kim Kardashian and his transition into devout Christianity, he would tell his then-wife to dress more modestly, like a good Christian woman. In a 2019 interview with The Cut, Kardashian told the publication that West:

"Voiced that sometimes too sexy is just overkill and he's not comfortable with that. I listen to him and understand him."

Double standards are common throughout the cult leaders we have seen throughout history. This particular expectation is one that we see in the women that take part in his Sunday Service. Maybe this is what drove Kardashian from him, the expectation of her to bow to his dictates.  We have recently seen West’s new wife, Bianca Censori, wearing strange attires to many of his services, some of which are unreasonably modest.

So, are we watching the making of one of the world's first mega musician-turned-cult leader, or will we look back when West breaks for the final time and tell ourselves we should’ve known because the signs were always there?
