Being the talk of the town by leading a public life and pursuing a career that puts him in the limelight are the last things Big Brother Mzansi winner Mc Junior (Siphelele Zondi) wants for himself in the "outside world".

After months of squabbles, sexual assault allegations, gossip and mjolo cocktails, the final Big Brother Mzansi curtain fell on Sunday 31 March. The show ended with Mc Junior becoming Mzansi’s brand-new millionaire.

After three months of self-inflicted lockdown at the Big Brother Mzansi house, Mc Junior and this season’s runner-up Makhekhe (Tshepo Tau) are back in the real world. The journey to his R2 million victory has been an authentic one for Mc Junior, who says he didn’t have a particular strategy in place and mostly just "went with the flow".

Mc Junior says:

The reality of being a millionaire has not sunk in yet, even though I entered Big Brother with the hope of walking away with the prize money. I’ve consistently said in all my diary sessions that I just wanted to be authentic, put my best foot forward and do my best. I never had anything lined up.

He breaks down the surreality of the fatigue that comes with the expectation to produce results every day for three months, affirming that being back in the real world is something that all the housemates have been looking forward to.

Ready to hit the ground running, Mc Junior said that the first thing he did upon leaving the house was call his partner. He explains that the affairs and mjolo that go on in the house are a trap he is happy to have escaped.

He adds:

I entered BBM because I had dreams and goals that required financing. As much as I appreciate the platform, I would be lying if I said I wanted to follow in the footsteps of former housemates who have gone on to lead public lives and pursue careers that put them in the limelight. If the opportunity to make a difference in the public realm presents itself, I will embrace it but this is not necessarily something I intend to actively chase.

Mc Junior wants to pursue a business venture that he has had his eye on for some time. He is not yet in a position to let the cat out of the bag about precisely what the business venture is but the young man has a good head on his shoulders. He says that whatever is left of his winnings after injecting some into his business, will go straight into investments.

The Big Brother brand has been marred by so much controversy over the years that the show was taken off the small screen for six years. This year was no different and Makhekhe who was in the thick of one of this season’s scandals, says he has grown since the experience with Bravo B who was disqualified from the show.

Makhekhe says:

The Bravo B episode was an eye-opener for me. Some of us are from the hood, and growing up ekasi, society encourages us to use derogatory terms against women and talk them down. BBM taught me how to respect women and I want to take this experience back to the township because I know there are a lot of Makhekhes like me who don’t know better.

Austin Powers film franchise actor Verne Troyer, who was in the 2009 American version of Big Brother, took his own life in 2019. Big Brother UK 2009 contestant Sree Dasari was rushed to hospital for slitting his wrists after becoming upset while viewing the episode of his own eviction.

This has prompted Mzansi to give the finalists psychometric tests in preparation for outside world readiness.

Makhekhe explains:

I am ready for the real world, especially after today’s psychological education. I am new to this life and it can be overwhelming because I am not leaving as the same man who came into the show. I want to focus on building myself and those around me.

Unlike Mc Junior, Makhekhe is open to a career in the public eye and as someone who previously identified as a Mahlalela, he is hoping that the platform opens up a door or three for him.

He says he has learnt a lot about teamwork, which shows in how he congratulates Mc Junior whom he says is deserving because of his genuine personality. For Makhekhe, the experience has been worth it despite losing out on the R2 million.
