We have a top-tier market when it comes to the consumption of wrestling and sports entertainment. All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is a fairly new offering, but our nation has responded much as you might expect by wolfing down every episode of this wrestling league, which you can catch on TNT Africa.

Speaking to us from her home in El Paso, Texas, Vickie Guerrero is nowhere near as menacing as she appears to be when she’s in the ring.

She is the widow of WWE legend Eddie Guerrero, who passed away in 2005 after an illustrious career in between the ropes.

She is best known for being his manager and wife. She subsequently had a love storyline with wrestler Edge and was one of the more polarising characters to grace a ring.

She has now moved her talents over to AEW and recommends you tune in to see what she is up to alongside her new cohorts.

Seated on the edge of her bed sporting her short pixie cut, she says: “It’s great to be at AEW. It’s such a breath of fresh air. Nyla Rose and I are just destroying competition left and right. We’re having a great time, we just acquired Marina Shafir into our group, and we have a great programme that we are planning for the next, four to five months. So, I encourage all the fans to keep watching.”

She will be showcasing her vast knowledge of this business to entertain you and she says the entire roster at this show is worth paying attention to.

Guerrero’s hallmark is being able to ruffle feathers with just a microphone in hand.

She elaborates: “Me being a manager and a villain, my mouth always gets me into trouble. I always look for the bigger talent to be on my side, so they [opponents] can’t attack me. That’s why I have Nyla Rose and Marina on my side because if I get in trouble, I know they’ll take care of that opponent, and I won’t get hurt.”

Armed with her iconic and now trademarked saying “excuse me”, you can expect to see Guerrero all the way in her bag. She recalls how that famous line came to be when she forgot her lines for a promo segment.

The audiences - who are very smart and usually looking to poke holes in plot lines and fight sequences - were angered and started yelling that Guerrero sucked and should not be in the business.

She says:

I went blank. They gave me a promo that was changed maybe three or four times before I went live and ended up flopping on the stage. I didn’t even know I forgot everything. I got very overwhelmed, and I yelled, ‘Hey, excuse me’ and they [the audience] kind of got taken aback. But then they yelled back at me, so I did it again. Week after week, the writers kept incorporating “excuse me” as I walked on the stage and the fans loved it.

“I mean, they love to boo me so it was such an iconic two words. I never thought it was going to give me success. But 17 years later, I have trademarked it and it’s part of my brand for my character. Everyone wants a video when they see me, you know, yelling, “excuse me” to them. So, by the grace of God, I’m very thankful. I’m just amazed at how these two words still have the fans associated with me. It’s been a great ride.”

But the Vickie we met is not as abrasive and confrontational as the one you might see out and about. It makes true when she says there are two versions of her.

Guerrero said;

Well, that’s something that I really pride myself on. The fans that watch on TV know that I’m a villain, they know that I am going to lie, cheat and steal. I’m going to manipulate in any way just to get a victory. But the one thing that I really try to show fans who see me outside the ring, at Comic Cons or independent promotions, is that I really am a nice woman.

She is looking to continue her husband’s legacy and further contribute to the rise of women in this male-dominated industry. Be sure to see wrestling’s best villain doing her thing on AEW.

Watch AEW on TNT Africa (DStv channel 137). New episodes of Dynamite and Rampage air every Saturday and Sunday at 10am.
