Mi Casa singer J’Something, whose real name is Joao da Fonseca, has just released a heartwarming song, as an ode to his relationship with God.

The 34-year-old singer has had an illustrious music career. It began with the music group Mi Casa, in which he served as the vocalist and guitarist, alongside producer Sipho Philemon Mphahlaza, whose stage name is Dr Duda, as well as Moshe Philip Kgasoane better known as Mo-T, whose trumpet riffs became their signature sound.

The trio released hits including Turn You On and Jika, which was their breakout song. They went on to release a myriad of songs which became South African anthems played at braais and in clubs.

After making music together for five years, in 2017 the group almost called it quits, after years of sweeping their issues under the rug. A report News24 report claimed that the group members hardly ever argued, but dealt with things and moved on. In the interview J’Something said:

If I were to be 100% honest with everyone, I was always worried because we never argued as a band. It was always just good vibes and if there were any issues we would sweep them under the carpet just to keep that good energy up.

Fortunately, their journey wasn't over and they would release their albums Familia in the same year and We Made It in 2020. Then followed single releases, including their song Rock3t, which came out earlier this year and was met with critical appraisal.

J’Something’s new release comes at the perfect time for his solo career, as the group members are branching out. While the band prepares for its European tour this month, it seems J’Something had something up his sleeve, a positive omen for their upcoming tour.

Aptly titled Not Alone, the song takes a quiet and contemplative look at who God has been in his life, and the journey he has walked led by the spirit.  The song is the first installment on a solo project, and what a project it is. Not Alone is very different from the sounds by Mi Casa that carried an entire generation.

In fact, if you were to listen to the song without knowing J’Something and his music background, you would be shocked to find an earlier discography with the vibrant House and jazz sounds that his career was founded upon.

The song takes inspiration from classic R&B sounds, and solidifies itself as a quiet ballad, which moves away from the traditional sound. For three minutes and 44 seconds, you begin to understand J’Something's religious journey and even feel inspired by the words “I do not walk alone”.

While the song is a gospel number, J’Something has done wonders in making the track feel like a universal jam filled with inspiration and motivation and fit for lovers of a quieter sound across any genre.

Speaking on the new release, he said: “Not Alone is a song I wrote in 2019 and in all honesty never intended to release it. It’s a song I actually wrote for myself, to remind myself how even though at times I may feel alone I do have a very real connection between body and spirit.”

During this time he decided to try his best to unbox and deconstruct himself and his artistry. This is when he decided to explore the only life he had, by taking it one day at a time.

He emphasised:

This song isn’t part of a specific religion per se but more so around something that religion so beautifully teaches us, and that is the idea that we all have a spiritual connection to a higher power. All I hope for is that this song lands on fertile soil. You are not alone.

The song seems to be a hit across platforms. However, Spotify listeners are really taking the time to listen to it as the buzz for the track has made various playlists on the platform including Fresh Gospel Africa, Fresh Gospel, Gospel Greatness, and Be Lifted.
