Top actress Thandeka Dawn King has played down rumours that she could be making a surprise return to the popular SABC1 telenovela Uzalo.

Sources said King had been approached to make a comeback, along with other popular original cast members Ntokozo Dlamini, who played the character of Mastermind, and Bonga Dlamini, who portrayed Mkhonto.

However, the DiepCity actress, who is currently off screen as she recovers from a knee injury, told City Press that she had no knowledge of such an offer.

She said:

There is no possibility of me going back to Uzalo because I am on Black Brain and I am currently on DiepCity.

However, City Press has learnt that actors on DiepCity are allowed to work on two productions at the same time. DiepCity lead actress Nozuko Ntshangase is also on Scandal! on e.tv, where she also plays a lead role.

King said she was not on the DiepCity set, but she would return when required.

“I will go back to set when they want me back ... I was injured on set and I am recovering from that injury,” she said.

In March last year, King bid farewell to her breakout role as MaNgcobo on the Durban-based telenovela Uzalo. She was written out so she could pursue other acting opportunities, which included her current role on DiepCity.

The Lockdown actress, who is a trained sangoma and healer, also took time off from showbiz to focus on her spiritual calling.

She added:

I have been a sangoma since 2009.

Sources close to Stained Glass Productions, the producers of Uzalo, have claimed that the award-winning actress was among a group of actors who would be written back into the soapie.

“After so much public outcry about the script and actors of Uzalo, the producers have decided to bring back their old characters to revive the daily show.

“First, they brought back Mastermind, who is played by Ntokozo Dlamini, and now they are in talks with Thandeka. Also making his way back to the soapie is the character of Mkhonto,” said a source.

Uzalo spokesperson Nomfundo Zondi said she was not aware of any changes to that effect.

“I am out shooting on the field. I don’t know anything about her [King] being written back into the show. It must be something that is still with production. I will check and revert,” Zondi said.
