The multi-faceted entertainer makes her radio comeback on 947

Following speculation over the weekend, Thando Thabethe took to social media on Monday morning to make the official announcement that she would be returning to radio.

From March 23 2021, Joburgers can hear her on 947 as she hosts the drive-time show.

Yes, she will be in the slot that has been vacated by DJ Fresh whose mic, along with Euphonik’s, was put on ice by 947 after the pair were accused of rape.

However, the replacement should not overshadow the fact that Thabethe is a radio force to be reckoned with and her fun on-air personality belongs in the driving seat of a prime-time show on a fun station.

I can’t wait to get behind the mic and contribute to our 947 audience’s listening experience.

Aside from the fact that radio line-ups change often and the fact that someone is always being replaced, no matter how famous they are, it’s important to note this return to radio as a triumph for Thabethe.

It’s important to not erase the achievements of women by prioritising men in their narratives. Thabethe is a DJ and an actress, philanthropist and entrepreneur – hello Thabootys! – and is more than capable of leading drive-time.

Thabethe is no stranger to the airwaves. She left 5FM, where she was the first woman ever to anchor a drive-time show, last year.

She later revealed that she was the last to find out her show had been cancelled by 5FM.

For her move to 947, congratulations and well wishes have started to pour in from celebrities.

One of the first came from 947’s flagship DJ and breakfast show host, Anele Mdoda.

Mdoda’s former teammate, Alex Caige, will join Thabethe as a co-host. In a press release, Thabethe conveyed her excitement about her return to radio.

She said: “I have always loved radio as a medium to genuinely connect with people through music and conversation. I believe that music is a true leveller, bringing people together in a place and time that is just about what they are hearing and how it makes them feel. I can’t wait to get behind the mic and contribute to our 947 audience’s listening experience”.

947 drive with Thando Thabethe starts on 23 March from 15:00 to 19:00

The DA recently released a controversial election ad in which the national flag is consumed by flames. Many took to social media to criticise the party, with former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela expressing disappointment, saying the DA could have used other ways to send its message. Do you think the DA took it too far with this ad?
