In his opening monologue as host of the 2021 Grammys last night, Trevor Noah said he was intent on doing things differently.

This was the first time a South African comedian hosted the sometimes-controversial awards ceremony so that in itself was different.

After two years of musician, Alicia Keys handling hosting duties, Noah brought a funny flair to the ceremony.

He started with: “I’m not going to front, the whole thing is going to be pretty different” because the nominees had to sit in a tent while other artists performed inside the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Speaking of the nominees, it was nice to see most artists still dressed to the nines, despite this being an event that encourages social distancing.

Beyoncé — who Noah fawned over as making history for the most Grammy Award wins of any female artist — matched her mask with a leather ensemble with a deep plunging neckline.

While this isn’t the first time a comedian hosts this ceremony — people like James Corden and Ellen Degeneres — Noah might have had a better rapport with the artists than they have.

He and Cardi B seemed to have the most fun.

We can’t wait to hear all about it on The Daily Show.

Noah’s year is off to a great start and we’ll be watching to see what he does next.
