I think I would have had at least three questions at the forefront of my mind when I completed my final year of high school at the end of 2001. Firstly, how am I going to spend my first end-of-year holiday as a matriculant or school leaver? Secondly, what do I need to do to obtain my driver's licence and how soon can I do it? Thirdly, how can I best prepare myself for university?

The one thing I probably would have spent little, if any, time thinking about was what I should take responsibility for as a South African citizen. Had I engaged in this kind of thinking (assuming I could do so in the first place) and had I been under the appropriate mentorship, I may have arrived at the following, more specific questions:
