Whether a direct or represented claimant; the health and well-being of all claimants is important to the Road Accident Fund.
Apart from the compensation paid to claimants, the RAF also assists claimants who require ongoing medical treatment by offering an undertaking certificate to access such treatment and rehabilitative services through its post claims settlement department.
This support takes many forms and may include home or car modifications, payment of caregivers in the case where the injured needs assistance with their daily activities or future medical care, physiotherapy, counselling, and access to assistive devices such as a wheel-chair or prosthetic.
The RAF’s post-crash care staff members hold clinical qualifications and skills in the medical field, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychology.
They are passionate about the people they serve and understand the needs of the claimants.
Their aim is to help claimants cope with the physically debilitating impact of car crashes, and are equipped to inspire everyone they come into contact with while giving them hope.
Hospital and field case managers who visit accident victims during their recovery in hospital and at home provide full ongoing support for claimants with serious injuries.
They are nurses or occupational therapists by profession. They assess the needs of claimants, write reports, and make rehabilitative recommendations.
Growing the wealth of medical knowledge and depth of technical experience is important at the RAF because the organisation must effect positive change in the lives of road accident victims in order to ensure they still make a meaningful contribution to society where possible.
Rehabilitation is about bringing road accident victims back to their former condition, or as close as possible to it.
It is also is about developing a culture of inclusion where diversity is understood, encouraged and valued in ways that ensure that both physically challenged and abled bodies thrive.
The RAF will continue playing its role in dignifying the lives of road crash victims. We encourage both private and public sector organisations to play their part by making necessary structural changes to their buildings, providing opportunities, and doing everything necessary to give physically challenged persons the normal life they deserve.
