The widespread introduction of cars and surfaced roads in the 20th century changed South African society forever, and the 750 000km road network (including paved, gravel and rural roads) that currently crisscrosses the country plays a crucial role in shaping our lives, supporting our mobility, improving connectivity and providing us with access to essential services and economic opportunities.
Within this setting, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) manages the network of national roads, which spans some 24 384km, and has an estimated replacement value of R420 billion, making it a cornerstone of South Africa’s infrastructure.
