A POLICE constable is in hot water for allegedly breaking the law!

The cop, who is stationed at Etwatwa Police Station in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, found himself the star of a viral video in which he could be seen intoxicated while in a police vehicle.

In the video, the cop is seen sitting in the back seat of the car and struggling to get out.

Gauteng police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said the incident happened recently.

"Gauteng police management noted, with concern and dismay, a video circulating on social media showing a member of the SAPS intoxicated inside a police vehicle.

"Police have conducted an investigation, and it's been confirmed that the vehicle belongs to Etwatwa Police Station and was driven by a police constable attached to the same police station. The member was unauthorised to drive the state vehicle at the time," said Masondo.

He said action was taken and the member has since been charged criminally with offences that include driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving a state vehicle without the owner’s consent as well as reckless and negligent driving.

Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni thanked community members who brought this mischievous behaviour to police management's attention.

"Such behaviour by the police officer won't be tolerated. These include police vehicles meant to serve the community and accelerate service delivery. Abuse and misuse of police resources is not on,” said Mthombeni.
