During her interview as a guest on Netflix series talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, Tiffany recalled what her childhood was like growing up with a violent mother.
In the interview Tiffany details how her childhood took a complete turn after her mother was involved in a tragic accident when she was only 8-years-old. “When I was 8, about to be 9, she had a car accident and her head went through a windshield,” she recalled.
“By the grace of God she lived, but she had to learn how to walk, talk, eat, everything all over again.” After making a full recovery following her accident Tiffany explained how he mother’s behavior suddenly became, “very violent and very verbally abusive” which made the actress believer her mother was “demonized”.
This is not the first time the 39-year-old has been candid about her relationship with her mother, in her memoir Last Black Unicorn she revealed how her mother would verbally abuse her.

“After the accident, oh my God, she would say the worst things to me, like 'You look like your ugly ass daddy, I hate him. I hate you.'” she wrote. And when verbally assaulting younger Tiffany wasn’t enough she would become physical.
“…She'd just punch me. Just full on. Because of her, I can take a punch like nobody's business. Teachers would ask, 'Why's Tiffany's lip busted?' I didn't say anything. As bad as she was to me, I still couldn't help but love her.”
Her mother was later admitted into a mental facility upon which she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and Tiffany along with her four younger siblings went into foster care.
“I was in group homes for a while. I hate thinking about that. It was more like prison. My comedy skills came in really handy,” she said. “I thought that if I made these girls laugh they wouldn't beat me up. But bully girl said, 'Ahh b*tch, we still going to beat your ass... but you funny.'”
