I grew up around a    big family in a very  small village.    I was always    a hard-working    learner; from the time I    was in primary school.    I always wanted to    make a name for myself    because I didn’t want to    end up like some of the    people in our village.    Poverty had a home in    our village. It is all about    survival of the fittest.    You look around and    see a lot of teenage    pregnancy and    unemployment and that    leads to crime. There’s nothing to do,  no entertainment and to    go into town, you have to    pay R35 for a taxi. In my home, no one    works besides my brother. He can only help us here and there  because he does not earn much. All of this motivated me to work hard at school. I wanted to grow up    and one day be able to provide for my family.
